Day 1: The Fruitening

Posted by Kevin | Fruitarian | Sunday 30 November 2008 9:23 pm

At the November 1st Vegan Drinks we were having a conversation with a few people about fruitarian diets. It’s always sounded a bit crazy to me, but after doing a bit of research I thought it might be interesting to try it. So instead of spending the holiday season eating junkfood non-stop, I am going to take the next three weeks to try a fruitarian diet. The two things that I am including in the diet besides fruit are nuts and alcohol. I can’t go a full three weeks without drinking because that’s truly crazy! Today was supposed to be day number three but 2 days of Thanksgiving leftovers and one dinner date at Bulan later, the fruitarian diet was pushed back. I’ve come to find out that fruitarian recipes are few and far between, but I found some pretty good ones at Fruitarian Universal Network. The Fruitarian Foundation is another fantastic resource including the general rules of fruitarianism. I’ll try and keep a daily journal of how things are going and any recipes I try out here on the site. Wish me luck!

Thanksgiving Recap

Posted by Kevin | Food | Friday 28 November 2008 8:52 am

We spent a low-key thanksgiving just cooking for ourselves this year. No family, no friends, just good food. We were a little late in the game getting our un-turkey, so we ended up making a Tofurkey instead of the fabulous Celebration Roast like some other people. All in all, it was a smashing success. On the menu was:

  • - Homemade French Bread
  • - Tofurkey with stuffing
  • - Mashed potatoes with green onions and gravy
  • - Green bean casserole
  • - Cranberry sauce

But the true highlight of the afternoon was homemade cinnamon rolls for dessert!

And to top it all off, some of Bob’s homemade boysenberry cider.

Mission accomplished.

Fur Free Friday: November 28th, 2008

Posted by Kevin | Events, Los Angeles | Wednesday 26 November 2008 12:04 pm

This Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is Fur Free Friday. The event began over 20 years ago and is now the most widely attended annual demonstrations of the animal rights movement. California is having three events, the largest being the Beverly Hills protest which is organized by Last Chance For Animals. Click on the image for the Beverly Hills protest information or click here for a comprehensive list of U.S. and international events.

Elise M.: Vegan Handbags Designed in Los Angeles

Posted by Kevin | Los Angeles, Products | Wednesday 26 November 2008 10:14 am

Elise M. just released a new line of handbags which are designed in Los Angeles and made of all vegan materials with no animal by-products. A quick search on the interwebs didn’t come up with a lot of info about the company, but it looks like there’s a handful of online vendors out there selling them. The price seems to be in the $70 – $80 dollar range, so a little more manageable than some of the other companies that cater to compassionate consumers. I’ve linked to a couple designs that I found on the “Hot Mama” online store. And no, I don’t usually browse for Hot Mamas, it just came up first in Google. Here are the designs:

Hobo Sueded Lattice Bag

$70.00

Sueded Satchel Bag

$70.00

Robyn Bag

$75.00

Evanger’s All Fresh Vegetarian Dinner for Dogs & Cats

Posted by Kevin | Pets | Tuesday 25 November 2008 1:43 pm

The sub-par regulations for pet food that lead to the melamine scare in 2007 and general pet health problems are a great concern of mine when it comes to our two dogs. They have always been fed a high quality vegetarian diet so when people noticed their pets getting sick and their food being recalled, thankfully it was never a concern of ours.

About 4 years ago, we would feed them one can of wet food in the morning every so often as a treat as well as their regular dry food at night. What started as a special treat has now grown into a daily routine. The first brand of canned dog food that they got was Nature’s Recipe Healthy Skin Vegetarian. At the time it was a little difficult to find and frankly, looked pretty gross, but they loved it, they’re dogs after all. When the Nature’s Recipe comes out of the can it was just a huge, unappetizing gelatinous lump. It can now usually be found at any Petco, but when that wasn’t available, we were turned on to AvoDerm’s Natural Vegetarian Adult Canned Dog Food. The quality and ingredients list certainly looks better than the Nature’s Recipe canned food, and is just a little more expensive. As far as our dogs were concerned, both were amazing. One thing I later found out was that both Nature’s Recipe and AvoDerm may have animal derived vitamin sources in their canned food, so we now try and steer clear of them.

About two years ago I stumbled across Evanger’s All Fresh Vegetarian Dinner for Dogs & Cats at the Pasadena Humane Society. The ingredient list for their vegetarian canned food starts off with fresh potatoes, carrots, peas, tomatoes, avocados, blueberries, and cranberries which trumps both AvoDerm and Nature’s Recipe whose primary ingredient is soybean meal. You can tell the difference in quality when it comes out of the can since you can actually see the vegetables and it’s not a liquefied/oily mess like the other two. Although Evanger’s food is not nearly as readily available as a brands like Nature’s Recipe and AvoDerm, they have been around for nearly 70 years and market themselves as “People Food For Pets.” There are quite a few places to get it online for a little under $2 per can including shipping.

What I find the most disturbing is that the pet food industry may include roadkill and the rendered remains of cats and dogs as their “hidden ingredients” in a can of commercial pet food, so it’s very important to do the research and be aware of what is going into your companion animals’ bowl. I would hate to think that animals euthanized at shelters would end up in our dog’s food bowls, or in our house at all for that matter.

Eric Prescott of An Animal Friendly Life has finally gotten full funding for his new documentary on veganism “I’m Vegan” and is currently casting. The project is is intended to address preconceptions about vegans and veganism, which he hopes will increase normalization of and appreciation for veganism. I’ve had dinner with Eric a couple of times and he has some great ideas so it’s nice to hear that he was able to finally start production on his documentary. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be a potential profile subject, fill out the questions below and submit them to casting@vegandocumentary.com.

1. How long have you been vegan?
2. Why are you vegan? (and/or What was your “A-ha!” moment?)
3. What does veganism mean to you?
4. What is your favorite thing about being vegan?
5. What is your least favorite thing about being vegan?
6. What are your favorite and frequent pastimes or hobbies?
7. Please share any kind of interesting story related to your being vegan (interaction with family members, roommates, schoolmates, co-workers, or experiences at restaurants, cafeterias, etc., etc.).

Kitchen Nightmares: Sante La Brea

Posted by Kevin | Los Angeles, Restaurants, Television | Monday 24 November 2008 1:18 pm

I finally had a chance to watch the Kitchen Nightmares episode from last week which I had saved on Tivo. Gordon Ramsey visits local Los Angeles vegan-friendly dining establishment Sante La Brea and gives it a make-over. It seemed a little overly dramatic, but when isn’t when Gordon Ramsey is involved. The fact that the restaurant had an “A” rating before he got there is a pretty good indication that they were on the right track already. We’ve been to Sante La Brea since this was shot for Vegan Drinks and everyone who had dinner there said the food was fantastic. The Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie we had for dessert was excellent and this show was a reminder that we really need to go back there for a full meal. You can catch the whole episode streaming on Hulu.
