Holiday Party at Union Lofts Tonight

Posted by Kevin | Donations, Events, Los Angeles | Friday 19 December 2008 3:09 pm

I wrote about dropping off toys for pets for the Operation Santa Paws program a couple of days ago, but there will be another drop-off point at Union Lofts in Downtown Los Angeles tonight. Stop by the roof (brrrr…cold!) at 325 W. 8th St. between 8 and midnight tonight and have a cocktail and mingle with other 2 and 4 leggers. Click on the image for all the details.

Rescue Group Needs Blankets Badly

Posted by Kevin | Adoption, Misc Stuff | Thursday 18 December 2008 10:24 am

As everyone in Southern California knows, it has been near freezing here. Sure, compared to some areas like South Dakota (where we’re going for X-mas) who are having highs in the negatives, 45 degree weather sounds practically like summer, but people in Southern California are not prepared enough for freezing or near freezing temperatures. Unfortunately, the 40 or so dogs at Linda Blair’s WorldHeart Foundation rescue organization in Acton are having to deal with freezing temperatures as well. They all have dog houses that they can use to get out of the snow, but those dog houses are not heated. The Foundation is putting out a request for any used blankets that you can donate that will help keep these poor animals warm. All blankets can be dropped off at this Sunday’s Mobile Pet Adoption in Moorpark Park located at 12061 Moorpark Ave., Studio City, 91604. You can find out more information about Linda Blair’s organization at their website here.

X-mas for the Animals: Operation Santa Paws

Posted by Kevin | Adoption, Donations | Wednesday 17 December 2008 9:36 am

During the holiday season one group that could really use some holiday cheer are the thousands of animals stuck in the local shelters. Operation Santa Paws is looking for donated pet toys for shelters and rescues to improve the health and demeanor of those pets while reducing their stress to increase the animals’ chances of being adopted. I can’t think of a more worthy cause. The drop-off point around my area in LA is Bob Taylor Properties at 5526 North Figueroa Street, LA 90042. They are accepting gifts through the 19th. Click for a wish list of items after the jump or check out the website here. (more…)

Day 16: The Fruitening

Posted by Kevin | Fruitarian | Tuesday 16 December 2008 10:36 pm

Day number 16. Only 4 1/2 more to go. It wouldn’t be so bad, but I end up eating the same thing day in and day out. The monotony is a lot harder to deal with than anything else. Smoothie for breakfast, fresh fruit for lunch, avocado for dinner with dried fruits and nuts with a few Larabars thrown in there, day after day. Tonight I had a special treat of calamara olives which were a nice change of pace. I never noticed how often we get offers to meet up for dinner. It’s been hard having to turn people down because I don’t really feel like going to a restaurant and eating fruit while everyone else is enjoying these fantastic meals. Only 4 1/2 more days….

A Click A Day: The Animal Rescue Site

Posted by Kevin | Misc Stuff, News | Tuesday 16 December 2008 1:43 pm

One of the easiest things you can do to help shelter animals is to visit The Animal Rescue Site every day and click on the button to help give food and care to pets in need. Funding for food and care is paid by site sponsors and distributed to animals in need at various animal sanctuaries and shelters run by The Fund For Animals. It looks like they get close to 400,000 people who click every day which is great, but the more clicks, the better. One good idea is to set up the page as your default Firefox/Safari/IE/Chrome/Opera page.

You can visit their site here.

Day 15: The Fruitening

Posted by Kevin | Fruitarian | Monday 15 December 2008 10:13 pm

I was looking up more info on Fruitarians now that I’m in the home stretch and it looks like I’m in the same company as Leonardo DaVinci. Here’s the only “famous” fruitarian that I could find. Actually, more accurately, I should be associated with Steve Jobs and Gandhi since they were both fruitarian for a while then quit, which is exactly what I plan on doing. Today was tough since it was freezing cold out. The last thing you want on a cold day is a frozen smoothie for breakfast, but I choked it down and then took an extra hot shower. Lunch was dried fruit and nuts but at dinner I broke down. It was the first time if you don’t count my planned “cheating.” I really, really wanted something “cooked” so I had a piece of toast with my regular dinner of an avocado and tomato juice. Plain toast has never tasted so good! I blame the breakdown on my girlfriend. She was the one who left bread sitting out on the counter, in plain sight, looking so delicious, so fresh, so willing to be toasted. It’s siren song was just too irresistible. Trust me, I felt guilty with every warm bite.

Gigantic Pet Peeve – Greenpeace

Posted by Kevin | Los Angeles, Misc Stuff | Monday 15 December 2008 12:13 pm

At least two times a week I am accosted outside my work by individuals campaigning for Greenpeace and eventually looking for donations. They always start with “do you have a minute to help save the environment” or some variation of that slogan. The first thing I do is look down at their shoes and 99% of the time they are wearing Nike, Adidas or some other leather based brand. I realize they are just out there doing a job, but I really want to point out the immense hypocrisy of wearing leather while trying to protect the environment. The photo for the post was taken by me when walking by one individual wearing Nikes who harassed me on my way to the post office telling me “the post office will always be there, but polar bears won’t.” The image was cropped to protect the stupid.

Vegan Mobile Hotdog Stand in Los Angeles

Posted by Kevin | Food, Los Angeles | Monday 15 December 2008 11:24 am

Although I haven’t had a chance to try them out, I’ve heard nothing but good reviews of The Frankenstand, a vegan mobile hot dog cart. You can visit the MySpace page to see where the cart will be next, but it looks like their calendar isn’t updated very regularly. I would suggest becoming a friend. To give you an idea of what you’re in for, they carry Vegenaise, hot sauce, BBQ, mustards, ketchup, kraut, relish, peppers, onions, and more to compliment their vegan hot dogs. It looks like they also do private events, which could be a lot of fun. Here’s their webpage.
