Vegan Reuben - To Live And Eat In LA

I just saw this amusing post on a random blog called “Vegan Reuben? I’ll take cardboard – it’s cheaper” where the non-vegan author talks about his vegan reuben experience:

I had lunch with a friend at a vegan restaurant in Santa Monica last week. I thought, ‘OK, I’m game’. Mistake. I love reuben sandwiches. Can’t beat the corn beef. But trust me – do not order a reuben at ANY vegan establishment. I wanted to heave. Now that’s not to say everything on the menu is as distasteful as my reuben. My friend had a vegan pasta that was really good.

It’s funny. I talk about vegan reubens all the time. I’m sure the reuben he is referring to is the one from Real Food Daily. I’ve eaten that one plenty of times, and I would have to agree with him somewhat. But I have to disagree that vegan reubens are bad everywhere. The Follow Your Heart reuben is stellar, and I have a hard time thinking of any better meal period than the vegan reuben at Chicago Diner. The pic is of the Follow Your Heart reuben and was taken from one of the old posts over at To Live And Eat In LA and is making me drool all over my keyboard as I type this.

Its my #1 fav vegan food in the world. Another not so stellar vegan reuben can be had at The Waffle on Sunset. Its made of Tofurkey slices that are grilled, but you can get it at 2am so that adds to the points, but it could very well be cardboard.

  2. I thought that picture looked familiar :)

The guy who wrote that article is a dumbass. Of all the fake meat type vegan options out there, the vegan reubens tend to be the most creative, and most delicious. I love how each place I’ve had one at is totally different from the last. The mistake is going into it thinking it’s going to taste like the real thing. Of course it’s not going to taste like corned beef- it isn’t corned beef, duh! I’m willing to bet that if he’d had the reuben at Follow Your Heart he’d be singing a different tune. Or not… some people are just so closed off to vegetarian food that they’ll still claim to hate it even if it’s the tastiest thing they’ve ever tried.

Also, that picture on his blog is the reuben at Flore, not RFD. How do I know? He stole it from my blog: http://www.toliveandeatinla.com/2007/flore-vegan-restaurant/

That is too funny, your post on there is great! I added to it with a simple “Busted!”

  4. Lex, thanks for having my back! In that guys defense after he read my comment he wrote me back, apologized, and said he would remove the photo or credit me. I’ve asked him to kindly just remove it as I’d rather not have my work (originally taken from a positive review of a different restaurant!) used to negatively critique vegan food & vegan establishments. I probably shouldn’t have called him a dumbass above (doh!) but that post of his is rather harsh and I was upset to see my photo used without permission to go along with it. Hopefully he will remove it soon. Thanks Kevin for inadvertently bringing this to my attention.
