After that horrible list from BlackBook Magazine, I decided to step up to the place and put together my Top 10. Here it goes:
- Follow Your Heart Cafe: If I had the choice to live down the street from any one restaurant in LA, it would be Follow Your Heart. Vegan Reuben every day please!
- Rahel Ethiopian Cuisine: Ethiopian food where everything on the menu is up for grabs and you don’t have to worry about if it has dairy or not.
- Madeline Bistro: Despite the issues with service/cost/schedule/whatever, you can’t deny that their food is amazing.
- Pure Luck/Scoops: I have to combine them since I have never had one without the other. Tofu Pesto sandwich and a milkshake is pretty much the perfect dinner.
- Udupi Palace: Best south Indian food I’ve had anywhere, and I’m talking anywhere. Mouthwatering dosas.
- Así Soy Tacos: A taco stand for those in the know, but count yourself lucky if you ever get to try them. Homemade salsa and marinated soy based “meat.” Too bad I only get to eat them a handful of times a year.
- Flore Café: Preferred to the O.G. Flore since it’s always empty, service is great and the fact that I could eat my weight in Tofu Benediction.
- Vegan Village Cafe: Vegan soul food and supplier of the ultimate junk food, vegan buffalo wings.
- Vegan House: The only one of the thousands of “vegan” Thai restaurants that will actually make their food spicy, not “you’re a white guy” spicy.
- Tierra Café: Although it’s nothing special, I eat there nearly 5 times a week, so there must be something I like about the place.
I must point out that I still have not eaten at the following restaurants (but plan on soon) which are all getting rave reviews: Shojin, Seed, Akasha and That’s Amore!

3. Shojin: because vegan Japanese is beyond unique
4. Madelines: because its better than not having it
5. Seed: because everything on the menu is fantastic
6. Native Foods
7. Veggie Grill
8. MCafe: because of their breakfast
9. Fore&Flore Cafe: they get lumped into one
10. Garden Wok: because its vegan Chinese food done right!
The coolest is that everyone’s top 10 list differs so much! We’re too spoiled to have so many options!!! Personally, I don’t each much at any of these any more because I’m trying to eat healthy, but when vegan friends come into town I hit them up like that usually and gain 5 pounds.

this is a GREAT post! i would have to think long and hard about my top ten…plus, i haven’t even tried tierra cafe or madeleine.
this list is so much better than that other lame one with all the meaty places.

Interesting. Real Food Daily didn’t even make my list. You must go to the mythical west side RFD that everyone claims is better than the one on La Cienega. Surprised to see Native Foods on your list as well since they use so much oil! Oh, and the best Chinese vegan is out in San Gabriel/Alhambra. There’s a bunch of great restaurants that I never get around to any more.

quarrygirl: Yeah, come up with your Top 10. It’s actually kind of hard. I came up with 8 no problem, but the last two were kind of fillers. I’m not going to say which ones those were. :)

Hi, Kevin!
As you mentioned above! you have to try Shojin and then decide the Top 10 vegan restaurant in LA again :)

In my defense, I’ve tried to go to Shojin twice and both times we got there and it was just closing. I’ll have to do an afternoon meal there instead of a late evening.
