As an iPhone owner, I’m always on the lookout for new/handy apps. There’s quite a few cool vegan/vegetarian apps that have come out recently and The Urban Vegan and Groovy Vegetarian have put together their Top 10 Vegetarian iPhone apps lists. I have personally used the Vegan YumYum app to come up with new recipes on the fly while I’m at the grocery store (or to drool over pictures while I’m killing time on the subway). I also use the VeganXpress app to see what is/isn’t vegan at chain restaurants (I wish I would have thought to check to see if The Yard House was in there when we were there last week). I have yet to try any of the vegan restaurant finder apps (Vegan Steven, iVegetarian, VegOut, etc.) since I will generally just pull up a quick Google search which does virtually the same thing. And after reading the lists, I just downloaded CrueltyFree which I will put to work this weekend.

You might want to check out Quarrygirl’s recent post about the hidden oyster sauce being used on otherwise vegan food over at The Yard House:

I saw that about the Oyster sauce. When we looked at the menu, we saw the same three items on there that they tried and none sounded very appetizing. Glad we didn’t go w/the lettuce wraps though! I’ll just stick with alcohol! :)

seriously dude, i got BURNED at the yard house. i wonder how veganxpress comes up with their research. i know they mean very well and are diligent to update when they find inaccuracies…but, OYSTER SAUCE? i paid $1.99 for an app to eat that? ugh.

Yeah, that sucks big time. I’ve just gotten in the habit of asking about fish/oyster sauce any time anything resembles asian food. Better safe than sorry, but those lettuce wraps are certainly a tricky one. Especially when the iPhone tells you it’s OK! I’ve still found a lot of helpful things on there that I didn’t know about like AMC popcorn having milk. Yuck!
