As part of the international day of protest against consumerism, The Vegan Collection will be shutting down our shop on November 27th from 12:01 AM until Midnight in observance of Buy Nothing Day. We prefer to spend the day examining the issue of over-consumption rather than selling product and suggest celebrating the day by doing something fun instead of fighting the crowds.

If you’re looking for something to do this Thanksgiving, Animal Acres has you covered, but you have to act fast! Gather with fellow veg pilgrims on Thanksgiving day for Animal Acres’ annual Thankful Turkeys Celebration. Festivities start at noon with farm tours of the sanctuary and at 1:30 everyone gathers to feed the feathered guests of honor (the sanctuary turkeys!) salad, pumpkin pie and stuffed squash. Everyone non-feathered that attends will enjoy a mouth-watering vegan Thanksgiving dinner provided by One World Vegetarian Cuisine and dessert from Cobblermania. Tickets are $35 per person (children 3 and under are free) and can be purchased here or by calling 661-269-5404. But remember, today’s the last day to buy tickets!
Someone tipped us off to this clip that was aired on TMZ on TV last week. Media mogul Harvey Levin takes out his Vegan Collection “Traveler” wallet and proclaims “Leather Free!” His staff gives him a hard time about it, but we think it’s great that Harvey’s standing up to his staff and standing up for the animals by not wearing leather.

Best Friends Adoption Festival:Sunday is Best Friends’ semi-annual pet adoption festival at the LaBrea Tar Pits. Rescue groups from all over Southern California are represented and will be bringing dogs, cats, bunnies, guineas, birds and reptiles. If you are visiting and want to help these homeless pets, you can bring unopened/unexpired cans of pet food for donations. Click here for all the information.

One of the best and most influential hardcore bands to ever exist was Born Against and this month’s Vice Magazine has a great interview with their drummer, Brooks Headley, by their singer, Sam McPheeters. Brooks recently made the transition from punk rock drummer to head pastry chef at NYC’s prestigious Del Posto restaurant. In the article they talk about their years of touring the country in bands as vegetarians and their current stance on vegetarianism. As Brooks puts it:
There are a lot of chefs that are anti-vegetarian. I am 1,000% pro-vegetarian. Chefs that are anti-veg are fucking idiots. They’re crybabies with a fucking warped sense of creativity. Your walk-in is filled with beautiful fruits and vegetables. Jesus Christ, make it work, dude. I’m totally stoked to send out my vegan desserts. It’s not a chore.
At the end of the article, he includes his special recipe for vegan Sorbetto al Sedano. It sounds like if you find yourself in the NYC area and are looking for a special vegan treat, head over to Del Posto and ask for Brooks’ specialty vegan desserts.
