I've been vegan for thirty years and investing has always been difficult. On the bond side I have used Vanguard's GNMA fund (residential mortgages- government guaranteed), municipal bond funds (free of federal income tax, the federal government is the biggest sponsor of animal experiments) and their REIT fund (rents from apartment complexes, malls, public storage units). I mention Vanguard because it is owned by its investors and thus has low fees. I don't know of any operating stock mutual fund suitable for vegans. Also, beware! Many of the companies making imitation meats have been bought by large corporations that are not acceptable. You can't buy shares just in the subsidiary. Regards, Fred

Harvey,

I think you are wonderful for supporting a vegan lifestyle and the animals it effects. This is so admirable. I work behind the scenes(volunteer with animal welfare work on line..sign petitions, send letters to big corporations(and small)to make them more aware of what they can do to improve on that topic. I'm not pushy(usually)but try to get my messages across assertively and with diplomacy. I also worked on Prop 2 which will--as I'm sure you know--will take effect in 2015 or 2016 regarding having more humane standards on factory farms and others. My point is that I am very disappointed when I see KFC commercials. KFC is one of the companies I have tried to work with. They continue to ignore more letters. They use very inhumane ways of raising their "broiler"chickens...make them grow 3 times the size they should be often to the point where they collapse under their abnormal weight(plus can have heart attacks...have you seen FOOD,INC?),cramming them in dark, crowded buildings, jamming them into transport cages(and break wings, etc as workers are pushed to work fast)and the worst is how they slaughter their chickens. They continue to use old inhumane methods when they can have the often of CAK(controlled atmosphere killing...die in transport from some substance injected into air=quick death)I also believe you might have McDonald's as a sponser or maybe that company and not KFC..not sure. Believe me, McDonald's fairs not much better despite being one of the richest fast food companies in the world. Just thought I'd make you aware of what you may unknowingly have been condoning.

Thanks for considering this matter. Also, thanks for supporting animal shelters and a vegan lifestyle!

Sincerely,
Kathryn Livsey

I'm curious as to where you heard that Jay food has oyster sauce. I've seen a vegetarian oyster sauce with the vegan Jay symbol on it being used in Jay food, never real oyster sauce. If you've seen real oyster sauce being added, please let me know-I'll be more watchful.

Seeing that our waitress at the museum was smoking while putting away the clean glasses, I don't know if the overall sanitary state of the restaurant is a top priority.

The schnitzel was some kind of breaded wheat gluten concoction which I'm guessing would be very similar to a veggie milanesa.

I think schnitzel is like milanesa? I would not like dogs inside a restaurant with me, that seems unsanitary. Chickens on the other hand...

Looking forward to your food posts!
